Your daily rate (TJM) is the single most important number in your freelance career. Set it too low and you leave thousands of euros on the table every year. Set it too high and you risk losing missions. This guide gives you a clear framework to calculate, benchmark and confidently negotiate your TJM.

Step 1, Calculate your minimum TJM

Under umbrella payroll, your TJM must cover gross salary, employer contributions, CP200 provisions and the platform management fee.

Target net monthly salary€3,500
+ Employee ONSS (13.07%)+ €524
+ IPP (estimated)+ €700
Gross salary needed€4,724
+ Employer ONSS (~27%)+ €1,275
+ Holiday pay provision+ €57
+ 13th month provision+ €393
Total monthly cost before fee€6,449
+ BSH fee (8% indicative)+ €560
Monthly invoiced revenue needed€7,009
Minimum TJM (÷ 20 days)€350 / day

Step 3, Factors that justify a higher rate

1

Specialisation and scarcity

Niche expertise commands a premium. A generalist Java developer is replaceable; a Java architect with deep experience in financial sector microservices on AWS is not.
2

Certifications and credentials

AWS, Azure, GCP, Salesforce, SAP HANA certifications justify rate increases of 10 to 20% above uncertified peers.
3

Track record and references

Clients pay for outcomes, not CVs. Specific measurable results from previous missions are far more compelling than a list of technologies.
4

Sector knowledge

A Java developer who also understands banking regulatory frameworks or pharmaceutical GxP compliance can charge significantly more than one without that domain knowledge.
5

Availability and timing

If a client needs you urgently and you are immediately available, you are in a stronger position to negotiate.

Step 4, The negotiation itself

Always anchor high

In any negotiation, anchor 10 to 15% above your target rate. This gives you room to negotiate while still landing where you want.

Reframe from day rate to total value

A senior developer earning €70,000 gross per year costs the company approximately €90,000 to €100,000 all in including employer ONSS, holiday pay, equipment, training and HR management time. That is €450 to €500 per working day, before recruitment time and risk.

Know when to walk away

If a client cannot meet your minimum rate, it is better to decline and find a mission at your rate than to accept below your floor.

Step 5, When to increase your rate

  • Growing experience and track record
  • New certifications or skills acquired
  • Inflation in Belgium
  • Changes in market demand for your stack

Success

Aim to increase your TJM by at least 5 to 8% per year. At €500 per day, that is €25 to €40 extra per day or €6,000 to €9,600 extra in invoiced revenue per year.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Setting TJM based on previous employee salary divided by working days
  • Never asking for a rate increase with long term clients
  • Accepting below market rates to build a portfolio when you already have experience
  • Forgetting that TJM must cover gaps between missions
  • Undervaluing sector expertise worth €50 to €150 per day extra
